En route to the 20th edition
Pre-festival anniversary screenings
The story of Split Film Festival has begun in 1996 and, from its very first days, it profiled itself as a cinematic force to be reckoned with. The first catalogue stated its artistic vision with utmost clarity:
“The energy and the author’s personal vision we may feel in some of the works presented at the Festival might alter a little our conscience, lower our self-importance, thus helping us to break the chains that bind us to our everyday habits and hopefully let us endure and even find a delight in this horrible, yet the most beautiful world.”
Nineteen editions into the future – and the vision still rings very much true!
In celebration of its upcoming 20th edition, we at the Split Film Festival have decided to give our faithful audience an insight into the years behind us! Starting with May 7, 19 weeks before this year’s Festival (12 – 19 September), film lovers will have a chance to revisit interesting titles from the previous edition—one edition per week—at the new Split cinema, Beton kino (Dom mladih, Ulica slobode 28), completely free of charge!
Generally, the screenings (one feature and several shorts) are planned for Thursdays, with the last one planned for the week before this year’s edition. By commemorating one Festival year per week, the idea is to use the 19-week programme run to remember the two decennia of film as art and our Split Film Festival as such. A few names worthy of a mention from the two-decade run: Bela Tarr, Lars von Trier, Chris Marker, Miklós Jancsó, Jonas Mekas, Jean-Luc Godard, Sally Potter, Tom Tykwer, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Albert Serra, Bruce McDonald, Julio Bressane, Glauber Rocha, José Padilha, Sergei Loznitsa, Avi Mograbi, Raya Martin, Antoine d’Agata, György Pálfi,Naomi Kawase, with many others.
